Many brides hold a special place in their hearts for their wedding dresses and save them as keepsakes. Some, however, choose to donate their dresses for a special purpose, where beautiful gowns are transformed into gifts of love.
One beautiful wedding dress can be turned into more than a dozen gifts of love for grieving parents, as a number of organizations across the United States are transforming donated wedding dresses into beautiful "Angel Gowns". These angel gowns provide burial clothing for tiny babies that are stillborn or die soon after birth.
Parents who lose their babies share a common grief aggravated even more with the problem of trying to find proper burial clothes for their baby. Usually these babies are too small for clothing purchased from a baby store, and grieving parents are left to finding something from doll clothes.
One group located in Fort Worth, Texas and led by Lisa Grubbs, wife of a neonatal specialist, has several volunteers transform wedding dresses into burial clothing. Lisa was inspired by the idea because she and her husband believe that the passing of a baby is a sacred event that should be treated with dignity. With this perspective, Lisa decided to start NICU Helping Hands.
See how these gowns bring joy to grieving parents.
Lisa found that with the passing of these tiny babies, they often can only be wrapped in tiny hospital blankets or towels. However, the Angel Gowns program gives parents the opportunity to have something more fitting for their cherished babies.
Lisa explained in a NICU Helping Hands press release,"There's something hopeful about that start of life, about a wedding, and to me, it's that full circle. This child who is so loved by its parents, being wrapped in love by a bride."
Each gown is made with tender care and beautiful workmanship, not to mention the fine fabrics and laces characteristic of wedding dresses. Though these gifts don't diminish the pain that parents feel, they feel uplifted knowing that their precious baby is cherished by others.
Another organization was started in Atlanta, Georgia, by Lori Beth Blaney. Her baby was lost just seven weeks before birth due to a terrible car accident. Lori Beth found it difficult to not hear her daughter's name often. So, she started Rachel's Gift to honor her baby and make a positive difference for grief-stricken parents in similar circumstances.
As a memorial gift, Lori Beth takes pictures of the infant and footprints to be given to the parents, along with a beautiful angel gown. In 2014, she and volunteers were able to help more than 217 families.
No doubt, there is a feeling of connection to the human family when grieving parents receive an angel gown. When a woman donates her wedding dress, it is given with a feeling of tenderness in knowing that her donation will be greatly appreciated.
